Born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1953, Thornton Walker is a distinguished printmaker, watercolour and oil painter based in Melbourne since 1965. He graduated from Prahran College of Advanced Education in 1975 and pursued postgraduate studies at the Victorian College of the Arts. Walker’s work balances ethereal and tangible elements, often featuring muted palettes and subtle light gradations to cultivate themes of stillness, memory and spatial ambiguity. His early bowls series presents a thoughtful inquiry into form and space, transforming everyday objects into profound meditations on quietude and perception, his handling of light, shadow, and colour coaxing viewers to embark on an introspective journey of the fleeting nature of light and existence. With over forty solo exhibitions, Walker’s work is held at The British Museum, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Australia.
