Born in Melbourne in 1928, Jeff Carter's photographic journey began when he hitchhiked with his typewriter and a folding camera in the 1940s. He worked as a freelance photographer-journalist, capturing a snapshot of Australian culture in images that frame a documentary-style narrative of the country's working classes. His black and white photographs have become portals to a different time, existing as valuable cultural and social metrics and strikingly engaging portrayals that celebrate the battlers - itinerant bush workers, fruit pickers, fishermen, millhands and labourers. In the 50s and 60s, Carter's work turned to the iconographic Australian coastal lifestyle, producing photographs of candid authenticity and storied nostalgia. Carter has authored and illustrated 20 books and his work features in leading galleries, museums and private collections in Australia and abroad.
