Mark Stoner

If there is a threshold, however vast, between humans and Earth, Mark Stoner's work shrinks it. Working with inherently geological materials, he forges compositions reminiscent of nature's astonishing capacity for symmetry and sequence, creating sculptural outcomes of resonant gravitas.

Mark's artistic journey exemplifies how science and creativity intertwine, showcasing the fascinating insights that arise when analytical inquiry meets imaginative expression. Through his work, he illustrates the beauty of translating complex scientific concepts in nature into visual narratives, inviting viewers to explore the symbiosis between empirical knowledge and the emotive power of art. His foundation in economics, political science, and geology from ANU, combined with time as a distinguished teacher within the ceramics and sculpture departments of the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), laid the groundwork for his unique perspective. A pivotal moment in 2010 marked a shift in focus to his artistic practice and began a transformative exploration of materials. His fascination with landforms translates into stunning creations crafted from Carrara Marble and Krause bricks, ceramic, cast concrete, granite and stone. Each piece, layered with strata and infused with a primal weight, speaks to the rich dialogue between the natural world and human influence. Mark's innovative techniques, involving the lamination and meticulous shaping of these materials, reveal their hidden structures and grains, crafting a visual narrative that harmonises nature's essence with human artistry. His work reflects his geological interests and captivates viewers, inviting them to appreciate the beauty in contrasts and connections.
