Sharon Monagle’s artworks are unapologetically drawn from her work as a medical practitioner with Off-kilter extending on an artistic vocabulary that bridges clinical anonymity and humanity’s shared essence. Engagement with each portrait and figurative work instils a sense of having entered a story mid-narrative with settings, figures, words and compositions reconciling to draw one in, making space for deeper contemplation and resonant connection. Unfolding from her strong interest in psychology and mental health in particular, Monagle’s thematic trajectory has long been anchored by her impressions of human behaviour.

Off-kilter presents a collection of works that ricochet into fascinating explorations of people - alone, in groups and in pairs, caught and bound in a world visually separated from reality through sombre colourways and slightly off-kilter arrangements. Common expressions writ across some canvases introduce a crack through which lightness lacerates offering storied clues and extending a hand to ease one into contemplation.

Through compelling chimeric scenes and subtle tongue-in-cheek humour these works accentuate the astounding diversity bestowed by the 0.1% that sets each of us apart and its powerful effect on how we perceive and are perceived.

Sharon's paintings are held in private collections across Australia, UK, France, Canada, Singapore and USA. Three remain in the permanent collection at Chateau d’Orquevaux, France.
